Rock, Peter

2018/01/28

Jesus is the rock of our salvation. He is The Rock in the Book of Daniel who smashes the statue with the feet of clay. The feet of clay represents a union of independent nations which will fall apart. This is the doing of the Lord himself. Jesus is the rock of our salvation.

Jesus is a sure thing. He is from Everlasting to Everlasting. He is the beginning and the end, the first and the last, The Alpha and the Omega.

Mathew 16:13-20

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Jesus told Peter that flesh and blood did not reveal to him He was the Messiah. It was his Father in heaven.

Up until that point Jesus had called Peter by the name Simon. Jesus said that you will be called Peter. Peter means little rock in the Greek.

Jesus who is the rock of our salvation called Peter a little rock. In other words, it is the confession of our faith that is the little rock of our salvation.

That is why the Bible says that we believe and are justified, and we confess and we are saved.

Believe -> Justified

Confess –> Saved

What is it that we believe in? We believe that Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world on the Roman cross, and three days later He overcame death by rising from the grave. In doing so, He paid for the sins of the world, and He made a way for us to be saved.

Our salvation is based upon the finished work of Jesus Christ. It is based on his death and resurrection. He paid the price for our sin, and then He made a way for us to eternal life.

By Jesus calling Simon by the name of Peter, Jesus was calling Peter’s confession of him a little rock. In other words, we are saved by confessing our faith in Jesus Christ.

Christ, Christian

Christ means anointed one. It is a translation of the word Hebrew word Messiah. Christian means little anointed one.

Christians are little anointed ones. They are Christ-like.

The easiest way to understand the thing about being like God is that we become part of the family of God, when we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and savior.

Psalm 8

For the director of music. According to gittith. A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth
You have set your glory in the heavens.

Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels, and crowned them with glory and honor.

You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Note: the first part of the Psalm 1 is the same as the last verse. This verse is about Jesus Christ, who is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and last, the beginning in the end. All things began with him and all things end with him.

Christ

What does the word Christ mean? It actually is a transliteration of the Greek word Christos.

It means Messiah. Messiah means anointed. It also means savior or deliver. Messiah came to mean savior over time. The original meaning of the word was anointed. Jesus is the anointed one.

The Jews or Hebrews were looking for a messiah. They were looking for the Messiah. They were looking for one promised them in the Old Testament. The prophets had said that God would rescue them, and He would rescue them through the Messiah.

The Old Testament prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah, or as He is more commonly known, Jesus Christ.

The name Jesus is a transliteration of the Greek word for the name Joshua. The meaning of the name Joshua is savior. That’s why Jesus was named Joshua. That’s why the angel told Mary his name was to be Joshua.

The meaning of Jesus’s name is the anointed savior. He is the anointed one.

We get a visual picture of this when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. When Jesus emerged from the water, the Holy Spirit rested on Him like a dove. A dove symbolizes peace. The law of Moses showed us our need for a savior. Jesus is the Savior.

Moses, Abraham, David and many of the prophets looked forward to the day when Jesus Christ would appear. When John the Baptist saw Jesus he said “Look! the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

Jesus came to take away sin, but he also came for something else. And that was to make a way for us to be saved. It even says that without the resurrection from the dead there is no forgiveness of sin. The cross and the resurrection are one thing. They are two parts of the same thing.

When Jesus ascended to the right hand of God the Father, He sprinkled His blood upon the Heavenly Altar canceling the written code which was against us. Jesus cancelled the written code, so that we can enter into a relationship with God. We no longer have a covenant with God by the written Law but by the Spirit. It is based upon the life of Jesus Christ.

When a person accepts Jesus Christ, they become born again. The Bible says what counts is a new creation.
